MORE ABOUT BIRMINGHAM
The smoke stacks of the industrial revolution have all but departed the Birmingham skyline; at least in the number that made the city the workshop of the British Empire. At the very heart of the West Midlands, today the city is stepping out into the 21st century with fine new buildings alongside grand Victorian piles from the past. Sample world-class ballet and symphony music by night, and be awe-struck by the stories told in a clutch of museums by day. Be absorbed by the working Black Country Museum in Dudley, the Leather Centre at Walsall and the Lock Museum at Willenhall. While you're about it try legging it through the brick lined canal tunnel at Dudley. Birmingham and its satellite Midland communities will give you plenty to talk about!
GETTING TO BIRMINGHAM
Birmingham is 114 miles or 182 kilometres from London.
coach The road route between
London and
Birmingham has become the first in the country to adopt a round-the-clock, through-the-year
coach service. That's if the country's airport services, the London-Oxford and the London to Scotland coach services are left out of the equation. Still, this is obviously serious business for Birmingham-based
National Express which has marshalled a fleet of the latest state-of-the art vehicles (complete with seat belts) to service the 114ml/182km that separates the capital from this West Midlands centre.
train Opt to make the trip to
Birmingham by
train and there’s a generous helping of choice. For one thing, train travellers have the choice between three/four train companies – all selling slightly different deals. There's the express speed of
Virgin Trains services; but then it generally costs more than the stopping - and far less regular - service offered by
Silverlink Trains/Central Trains. Both
Virgin and
Silverlink run from
London Euston Station to
Birmingham New Street. by way of the Midland city’s
National Exhibition Centre and
airport. Chiltern Railways, on the other hand, runs from
London Marylebone to
Birmingham Moor Street/Snow Hill stations via
Leamington Spa and
Warwick. 'plane There is no scheduled air service between
London and
Birmingham. With just over a hundred miles separating the two centres it has so far proved to be economically unviable. There are, however, direct flights into
Birmingham Airport from a host of mainland Europe and North American cities. All the
London airports - with the exception of London City – offer coach links with Birmingham city and its airport. A train service runs direct from
Stansted Airport every hour through the day and there are train connections, which involve changes, from all the other
London airports.
