WHAT'S IT ALL ABOUT?

Getting About Britain, explains the workings of the UK's train, 'plane, coach, bus and ferry services. What runs to where, when and how fast. And how much it costs.

We shall be increasingly touching on alternative travel too. Everything from cycle hire to group tours that travel by car and all the other forms of transport we cite above.

Britain's destinations are part of our rich tapestry too. From tiny hamlets in the Cotswolds to valley towns in Wales (complete, of course, with its resident choirs).

Getting About Britain started life as a paper guide .

A one-time paper guide produced for the British Tourist Authority (now VisitBritain) for overseas visitors to the UK, before 2008 is out we shall be refining our presence in cyber space.

Stay with us and see the fun!

  • Playing to the galleries lines up Britain's stock of glorious museums and art galleries. The lofty halls we list are home to dazzling displays year-round.

We bring you the schedule of shows, where and when they can be seen and if there is an entry charge.

Access to the main permanent collections across Britain for the most part, are free. Only entry to the special visiting shows - though not all - levy an admission charge.

  • Top: Artist's impression of the Gatwick Express as it heads out of London. This latest generation train, which runs at 15min intervals through the day, covers the 30mls/48km between the capital and airport in 30mins.
