Llanelli is a classic example of post-industrial Britain. For a town once throbbing with the machines of heavy industry and busy docks, what has emerged today is a country park of sand dunes and lush grassland stretching for 15mls/24km along the estuary of the River Lougher as it flows into the Bristol Channel. Miles of cycle paths run the length of the park; there is a wide sweep of sandy beach; and a newly installed high-tech marina at Burry Port. To the east of the town the largely winged inhabitants of Wales' National Wetlands Wildlife Centre nestle into their sand dune home. From London, Llanelli is a 3h and 5h express train and coach ride away.
