The Isles of Orkney lie 6mls/10km off the north coast of Scotland. This is territory rich in wildlife on the land, in the air and in the sea. It is also rich in the remains of man from the prehistoric ages. Ferries sail to the islands from the mainland ports of Aberdeen, Scrabster, Gills Bay and, through the summer, John O'Groats. Kirkwall is the island capital and main port. Kirkwall's airstrip handles all in-bound scheduled flights. Inter-island (16 of the 67 islands in the group are inhabited) there is constant timetabled sea and air traffic year-round. The air route between the islands of Westray and Papa Westray enjoys the singular reputation as provider of the shortest scheduled flight in the world. All the island transport movements are available from Orkney Tourist Information.
