Fishguard Harbour

Ferries sail year-round from Fishguard Harbour to and from Rosslare in the Irish Republic. This idyllic spot on the Pembrokeshire coast in south-west Wales, sits on Britain's only coastal national park. It's a spectacular landscape of rugged cliffs, sandy beaches, wooded estuaries and remote inland hills. And, perhaps most famously, the town lies on the route of the 186ml/299km Pembrokeshire Coast Path which each year attracts hundreds of thousands of walkers from around the world. But for a little bit of international fame from the past, turn the clock back to 1797. Some 4mls/7km down the coast from Fishguard at Carregwasted Point, a force of French soldiers put ashore in what has since become known as 'The last invasion of Britain'. Still, it was an ill-conceived and badly planned mission with the result that the invaders were overcome within days. In 1997 a community created tapestry - The Last Invasion Tapestry - was produced to mark the 200th anniversary of the landing. There are plans to give this impressive large-scale work a permanent, round-the-year home in the town during 2006. Check with Tourist Information for details.
