Western Isles (Lewis)

The Isle of Lewis sits at the northern end of the 130ml/208km chain of islands off the west coast of Scotland, known as the Western Isles or Outer Hebrides. Lewis is by far the largest island in the group and is home to Stornoway, the only sizeable town. As an offshore bulwark against an unpredictable and often intemperate ocean (the Atlantic), the Western Isles must rank among the most hardened. The scars of battle are all over the place. From water-filled moorlands, to deep sea lochs and defiant mountains. And there?s a lot of pre-history about too. Like the stones of Callanish and the Dun Carloway Broch Iron Age stone fort; after 1,700 years, the 30ft/10m high walls are just as they were when first put in place. The Stornoway ferry out of Ullapool makes the connection.
