Isle of Skye

The Isle of Skye is probably the most fabled of Scotland?s west coast islands. Nothing adds to the fable more effectively than the Skye Boat Song. ?Speed bonnie boat, like a bird on the wing?Over the sea to Skye? it incants. On an island 50mls/80km long and with no point more than 6mls/10km from the sea, can be found a landscape of deep lochs and challenging mountain peaks - arguably the most spectacular scenery in the Highlands. The devoted climbers and walkers that the island attracts say amen to that. Portree, the island?s 'capital', is a picture of neat white-washed houses and small hotels lined up around the town?s ancient quayside. Celebrated Dunvegan Castle, 800-year-old stronghold of the Clan MacLeod, is a ?must visit? (April ?Oct) even though it involves a 17ml/27km snaking road journey from Portree.
