Ferry port for Scotland's west coast islands: to Mull, largest of the Inner Hebrides; to Iona, the cradle of Scottish Christianity, and Staffa and Fingal's Cave which gave birth to Mendelssohn's celebrated overture of the same name. Ferries also sail from Oban to the Outer Hebrides (otherwise styled the Western Isles), some 30mls/48km offshore out in the Atlantic. Oban is at the centre of an area of immeasureable beauty with a panoply of Highland peaks, of sea and freshwater lochs, of castles by the granite load, of squadrons of wading birds and, in May and June, flowers painting in the west coast colours of summer.
