Once the favoured home of Scottish kings, Jedburgh is now a centre for riding, walking and climbing in the hills that surround it. The now ruined abbey owes its foundation, in 1118, to Prince David, later King David I. An audio tour comes in the price of the entry ticket to the abbey. In the 13th century, the town could count a castle as one of its significant buildings though it was to have a life of a mere two centuries; a former county prison now stands on the site.
