'Capital' of the Scottish Highlands, hub of road, rail and air movements and North Sea (Moray Firth) end of the Caledonian Canal. Inverness takes its name from 'inver', the Gaelic for river-mouth, and the River Ness, beside which it sits. The canal courses for 60mls/96km through Scotland's Great Glen, and the waters of Loch Ness, before emerging in Loch Linnhe beside Fort William on the west coast. As from summer 2006 (to end of October) there are regular scheduled sailings the entire length of Loch Ness from Inverness to Fort Augustus. The fast marine craft Loch Ness Express brings the two places within 1h 20m of each other.
