Dumfries

One-time seaport on the River Nith and administrative centre for the southern Scotland region of Dumfries and Galloway. Dumfries was home to 18th century poet Robert Burns in his final years, and the writer's mausoleum and Robert Burns Centre can be found there. Preserving the literary connection in these remote rural parts, Wigtown, 50mls/80km west along the coast of the Solway Firth, has become Scotland's Booktown.
