Victorian spa town at the heart of mountainous rural Wales. In its heyday, 80,000 visitors took the waters at Llandrindod for aches and pains and cures for all manner of bodily ailments. The annual Llandrindod Wells Victorian Festival (last week in August) marks these halcyon days with dances, street entertainment, arts and crafts and choral music. Of course, the countryside of Mid-Wales can be sampled year-round. Pack your walking boots and travel there by train via the glorious Heart of Wales Line. Or simply soak it up from your train seat. Hop on at Swansea, the line's southern terminus on the Bristol Channel coast. Or catch it at Shrewsbury, the English Midlands border town which serves as the the northern end of this 120ml/192km heroic rail route.
