A one-time fishing and - in the 19th century - shipbuilding harbour at the mouth of ('aber' in Welsh) the River Aeron on Wales' west coast. Today there are more yachts and pleasure craft than fishing boats. Still, ranks of colourfully painted early 19th century Regency houses along the harbourside provide not only a link with the past but also a warm Cardigan Bay welcome to visitors. The inland backdrop to the town offers fine hill-walking country.
