Winchester

As recently as 900yrs ago, Winchester was the capital of England - successively under the Saxons and then the Normans. Even when the Normans adopted London as their capital, Parliament continued to meet regularly in this Hampshire city. In visual and social terms, Winchester has been dominated by the long, grey presence of its cathedral which William the Conqueror began in 1079. It contains the tombs of a line of pre-Norman kings, including Canute, and celebrated 18th-19th century writer Jane Austen.
