Stoke-on Trent is home to some of the world's finest pottery designers and manufacturers, among them celebrated names like Wedgwood, Royal Doulton, Spode and Portmeirion. Stoke-on-Trent is made up of six separate towns - Tunstall, Burslem, Hanley (the city centre), Stoke, Fenton and Longton. Collectively they are affectionately known as 'The Potteries'. It was given to novelist Arnold Bennett, at the turn of the 19th/20th centuries, to add a famously literary dimension to five of the towns in works like Anna of the Five Towns and Clayhanger. Many of the potteries maintain visitor centres, factory shops and ceramic museums. There is too the £100m redevelopment of Trentham Gardens and the unique Monkey Forest. The Tourist Information Centre can point you in the right direction. Visit Brochurelink for a free guide to Stoke-on-Trent.
