An attractive hillside and riverside city in present-day Hertfordshire founded and named Verulamium by the Romans. Ample evidence of Roman occupation remains, including a theatre and mosaic pavement. An engagingly presented museum tells the story of Roman occupation. The city of today takes its name from the Christian martyr St Alban who, it is believed, was beheaded on the hill where the impressive cathedral now stands. St Alban's Cathedral has the second longest nave in Britain.
