One of a string of resorts built around Tor Bay on the south Devon coast. The sheltered position of this English Channel location brings it a Mediterranean climate in which tropical plants flourish and for which the area has been dubbed the 'English Riviera'. Sewing machine tycoon Isaac Singer built 100-room Oldway Mansion in Paignton, modelled partly on Versailles. The zoological and botanical gardens in the town are well worth a visit.
