One-time straw hat and lace-making centre. With the coming of World War Two it became a manufacturing centre which, in its postwar years, led to rapid expansion as an assembler of cars. Luton sits on the north-south M1 motorway and one of the main rail routes between London and the Midlands and the North. Its airport is classed as one of the five 'London airports' with flights across the UK and Europe. There are frequent and fast road and rail links over the 30mls/48km from London to Luton.
