Busy port and market town since the Middle Ages, King's Lynn was known as Bishop's Lynn until 1539 when it took on its new name as part of Henry VIII's programme of stripping the Roman church and monasteries of their power. Many fine old buildings in this East Anglian town remain, including the 1683 Customs House and 12th century St Margaret's Church which contains two of England's largest brasses (from the 14th century).
