Some 20mls/32km west of York, the spa town of Harrogate presents a picture of rude green health. Not by accident is the Northern Horticultural Society headquartered here. The town sits on the cusp of moorland country with the Yorkshire Dales beyond to the west. Obviously this is a place which has learned how to relax and enjoy the good things of life, a style of living developed on the back of prosperity from the all-around wool industry. It's a living which has been cultivated over centuries. The Royal Pump Room Museum (1842) still has an old sulphur well. There's elegant Victorian architecture, banks of flowers, green open spaces and shops in abundance which have not lost the knack of ways to impress.
