Newcastle

Seaside resort in County Down on the south-east coast of Northern Ireland, close to the Irish Republic's border. It has as its backdrop Slieve Donard, at 2796ft/852m the province's highest peak and seaward end of the legendary Mountains of Mourne. Responding to the BBC's web portrait of Newcastle, correspondent Mike Smyth of Sunbury, Surrey writes: "Climb only a few hundred feet up the mountain and look back at County Down - for me there is nowhere quite like it. It has been more than a few years since I was there but the sense of peace and tranquillity I experienced stay with me even today."
