Buckingham

An elegant ancient market town, Buckingham was pronounced county town of Buckinghamshire in 888AD by Alfred the Great. But a devastating fire in 1725 spelled the end of its county status - that honour passed to Aylesbury - even though it embarked on a wholesale rebuilding programme in that year. Today the town represents mainly Georgian architectural influences. The Tourist Information Centre is attached to the old jail, which in itself is part of the show for visitors!
