Brighton

A Regency resort city by the sea which owes its allure to royalty at the turn of the 18th/19th centuries. It was the Prince Regent, later to be King George IV, who gave rein to such illustrious architects as John Nash (creator of London's Regent Street) to devise fanciful splendours as the Royal Pavlion (right) and terraces of houses in the grand style of the Georgian age. Today Brighton resolutely holds on to this creative past, to which it has added a vibrant 20th/21st century year-round programme of artistic endeavour in museums, art galleries and an annual international festival in May.
