CAERPHILLY Order brochure:

Nestling in the rural heartland of Southern Wales just 10mls/16km from Cardiff, the borough of Caerphilly has a great deal to offer any visitor wishing to take a short break and explore the rich heritage of this fascinating area.

Visit majestic Caerphilly Castle whose fortress sprawls over an impressive 30-acre site, making it easily the biggest in Wales. Often threatened, but never taken, the castle still intimidates the onlooker. Its only sign of weakness is its tipsy tower which out-leans the Tower of Pisa.

For those who enjoy the great outdoors, the borough provides walks with interesting angles: along the Gelligaer and Darran Valley circular walk discover a Roman Fort, constructed in AD 103 – 111 during the reign of Emperor Trajan. Now the stone fort is covered and protected, but the defences can still be seen as a low broad bank. Countryside rambles take place frequently throughout the year, led by local Rambler Association groups, taking in historical locations and mountain climbs for fantastic scenery. For road and rail links check out getting there.

CAUSEWAY COAST & GLENS Order brochure:

The Causeway Coast and Glens is a unique region where nature has perfected a landscape of unsurpassed beauty and man has woven a rich tapestry of history, heritage and myth.

This is a place where rugged coastline merges into still, silent glens and unfolds into lush forest parks. Where beautiful beaches beckon. Where rivers wander through rolling lowlands. Where sleepy villages nestle next to busy shopping towns.

An ideal way to experience the region is to take the Causeway Coastal Route, which is seen as The Essential Irish journey. It takes you from the outskirts of Belfast on one of Europe’s most scenic journeys of picturesque fishing villages, rugged cliffs, designated areas of outstanding natural beauty and the Unesco World Heritage Site at the Giant’s Causeway. There are also small circular tours which take in places including Slemish Mountain, the Lower Bann Valley, Island Magee and the magnificent Glens of Antrim. For a start, sample South from Antrim.

ESSEX Order brochure:

Between London and the sea to the east, lies the ancient Saxon county of Essex. Traces of medieval times can be found in delightful small towns such as Saffron Walden, Coggeshall and Thaxted. Medieval industries such as weaving and saffron growing created great wealth which led to the construction of many beautiful houses and fine churches. The Romans made Colchester their capital; the Normans left their mark with castles.

With its long coastline, Essex boasts a real maritime flavour. The resorts at Southend, Clacton, Frinton, Walton and Dovercourt offer all the fun of the seaside. Then again, quieter coastal places like Harwich and Maldon offer enormous character and historical interest. Away from the towns much of the coast is remote, undisturbed and of great importance to nature conservation.
